HELLO,
FROM OUR
OWN SUSAN HERMAN IN INDIA!
Hi, Yogis
and Yoginis!
I am in
Pune India since December 30, 2008. I am having the pleasure
and privilege of studyng with the Iyengars (Guruji, his daughter
Geeta, and his son Prashant) at the Ramamani Yoga Memorial Institute
in Pune. It
is a thriving, hectic, busy, exciting, but polluted city. It is
the college capital of India and quickly becoming at IT capital
as well.
Yoga at
the Institute is intense. We do our own practice 6 days a
week for 3 hours. There are about 100 students this month all
practicing together. Then we have a 2 hour class every day. Mr.
Iyengar, who is now 89 years old practices at the same time. If
we
work hard maybe we too can practice when we are that age. You can
only imagine what it feels like to practice with the master and
observe his own practice and his attention to the practice of the
students. He often stops his work to focus on someone who is
practicing near him.
His grandson
and granddaughter practice with us. You should see how hard he works
them and how diligently they respond! It is very
instructive to see how his eyes can see everything even the slightest
slack skin in a quadriceps muscle-which has 4 parts (front thigh)
and
hamstring muscle-which has 3 parts (back of thigh). I feel like
my
body has developed inner eyes everywhere and my outer eyes see much
more in other bodies than they used to.
Most of
the classes I have are with Geeta. Her instructions are
inspirational. She is detailed, clear, and her explanations can
always be felt in the body. Her sequencing of poses is dynamic,
creative, and just plain brilliant. We hold some poses for 10 or
15
minutes although not a standing pose thank goodness. We often repeat
a pose 10 times in different forms. That has taught me to really
focus of certain alignments and work them with great specificity.
I
have a class with Prashant every Tuesday. He is more philosophical
in that class and talks about the body, mind, and breath and merging
them so that they work with one another. We do just one or two poses
over and over to facilitate our developing that working relationship.
When we
all practice together each of us does our own practice and
works on whatever poses we think will further our development.
Sometimes we practice something that Guruji is showing a student.
The other students (many of whom are certified teachers) are generous
in helping one another. The creative use of props has helped me
a lot and I hope to be able to show you some of the things I have
learned that really help whether you are an advanced student or
a very beginner.
I could
go on and on but I will save that for another time - for when
I come back to Starseed/Montclair inspired and informed by all I
have learned, ready to teach it to all our wonderful Starseed students.
Om shanti
(peace and love)
